Photography You are here: Home / Blogging Tips / How to redirect all 404 errors to the home page in WordPressHow to redirect all 404 errors to the home page in WordPress March 20, 2015 by Rick WordPress typically redirects broken links and calls to missing pages or posts to a special 404 error page (i.e. 404.php) which displays an error message stating that the requested page could not be found. This 404 error page will often list a number of links to important pages on the blog as well. Some bloggers however prefer to have all 404 errors redirected to the blog's home page instead. If you're one of them, here's a simple and easy way to accomplish that task:  1 - Rename your theme's existing 404.php file to something different. To make things simple I always rename mine to 404-original.php. That way if I ever decide to revert back to the original 404 error page, I can just rename this file back to 404.php and I'm done. 2 - Open Notepad, then copy and paste the following into a new document: 3 - This step is very important: Replace the URL http://www.ricksdailytips.com in the above code snippet with the URL of your own blog (otherwise all of your 404 error traffic will be redirected to my blog instead). 4 - Click File>Save As and name the newly created file 404.php. 5 - In the Save As Type: dropdown box, select All Files. 6 - Click Save. 7 - Upload your new 404.php file to your blog's active theme folder, which is typically found at: /wp-content/themes/theme name/ That's all there is to it. From now on all links to pages that don't exist will be redirected to your blog's home page instead of the 404 error page. Follow @TechManRick Like my tech tips? Subscribe to my f
